Why links are needed

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Though search engines claim to have advanced algorithms, most of them rank websites on the basis of their link popularity, that is, the number of websites that link to them. To rank well in search engines, a website should get links from other relevant websites.

One way to get links is by sending requests to other website owners. However, few website owners run their websites as charities and will provide free links to other websites, since they have to webhosting and domain registration/renewal fees. Another option is to exchange links, they will post a link to each others website. However, it is difficult to monitor whether the link has placed as promised. If one of the webmasters is dishonest, he could remove the link soon after it is placed and get a free one way link.

The most reliable way to get a link to your website is to pay for it. The website owner can pay for a specific period depending on the budget available. Usually payment is for a duration of a month , three months, six months, one year or permanent. Many link building firms value a link based on the Page Rank (PR) assigned by Google, though many other SEO companies rank a website based on its link popularity with other search engines also.  The higher the PR, the more expensive the link and shorter the duration for  which it will be purchased.
